On the 24th January, James Wild MP visited Burnham Market Primary School to celebrate the hard work and achievements of pupils during their morning assembly, meet with staff, and gain a firsthand look at the school's vibrant community.
With 92 pupils aged 5 to 11, Burnham Market Primary was recently upgraded to "Good" by Ofsted, with "Outstanding" in the area of personal development. Under the leadership of Headteacher Rachel Stroulger, the school has achieved strong academic results, with 62% of pupils meeting the standard requirements at key stage 2. Key to this has been the school’s strong emphasis on providing a language-rich environment, particularly in early years, to lay strong foundations for pupils’ later studies.
James’ visit began with the presentation of academic awards to pupils in recognition of their dedication, accompanied by a commemorative sticker. Following the ceremony, James addressed the entire school, offering insights into his role as an MP.
He was then led on a tour of the school, where he observed its strong emphasis on reading, a text-rich curriculum, and diverse extracurricular activities including arts, music, sports, drama, and filmmaking – many of which had been praised in recent inspections leading to its grading of 'Outstanding' in this area.
The tour concluded in the Year 5/6 classroom, where James shared his journey into politics, explained the workings of Westminster, and discussed how laws are made. Pupils were actively engaged in the discussion, posing thoughtful questions and demonstrating a keen interest in the political process.
Following the visit, James Wild MP said:
"It was a pleasure to visit Burnham Market Primary and see the school’s commitment to developing well-rounded individuals and recognition of pupils representing the school’s values. The dedication of both staff and pupils is clearly contributing to the school’s success.”
Headteacher Rachel Stroulger commented:
“We are always looking at welcoming community visitors into school and showcasing the work that the staff, children, and parents are doing here to provide the best and most varied opportunities possible for our children.
All were inspired by Mr Wild's visit, asking inquisitive questions about his time in Westminster. We look forward to welcoming Mr Wild back into school in the summer and developing this community link further.”
Having already visited over 40 local schools, the visit built on James’ ongoing campaign to connect with local schools, and best understand how to support and tailor to their unique needs.
