During a statement on the government’s major reforms to the planning system, James Wild MP questioned the Housing and Planning Minister on his commitment to an infrastructure first approach to development and called on him to help approve funding for A10 West Winch Housing Access Road.
As part of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk’s Local Plan thousands of homes are due to be built in West Winch. However, it is essential that the Access Road is provided to minimise the impact on local people of this development and unlock more housing, jobs, and growth.
The government’s reforms will almost double the level of housing need targets imposed on King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council from the current target of 554 homes a year to 1,042. This represents an 88 per cent increase.
James has consistently campaigned for this important infrastructure upgrade working closely with Norfolk County Council and the borough council.
Speaking in the House of Commons, James said:
“The Minister confirmed that the Government supports an infrastructure-first approach. Will he work with colleagues in the Treasury and the Department for Transport to ensure approval of the A10 West Winch Housing Access Road funding, which is essential to unlocking thousands of homes included in the local plan on the edge of King’s Lynn.”
The Minister of State for Housing and Planning said in response:
“The Honourable Gentleman’s request has been noted, and I will ensure my ministerial colleagues are made aware of it.”
Commenting after the exchange James said:
“It is very concerning the government has almost doubled the annual target for homes in West Norfolk with no regard for local views or plans for improved infrastructure. Existing development is already putting strain on doctors, dentists and other public services. At the same time as hiking our target, the government has downgraded targets in major cities including London where demand is highest.
“One way the government could demonstrate it understands new homes must come with new infrastructure is by approving the business cases and funding for this vital A10 scheme. I will continue campaigning to secure this funding and hope ministers will follow their words with action.”
