James Wild MP joined the vibrant celebrations to mark the 818th opening of the King’s Lynn Mart on 14 February 2025.
The festivities began with a grand procession from King’s Lynn Town Hall to Tuesday Market Place, where attendees gathered in front of the dodgems for an official opening ceremony led by the Mayor of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, Councillor Paul Bland. The ceremony included words from the Mayor reflecting on the historic significance of the annual fair, before taking a moment of prayer.
Following the formalities, James soon embraced the lively atmosphere of the Mart, by of course, taking the dodgems for a spin, where he joined others from the procession for a spirited ride, before getting stuck in with the many attractions on offer. He tested his strength on the boxing machine, showcased his aim at the football target challenge, and made sure to take a ride on the classic helter-skelter.
The King’s Lynn Mart is a longstanding local tradition dating back over 800 years, with its origins rooted in the establishment of a market in the town as early as 1104. The historic fair, which has evolved from a trading event into a vibrant funfair has long served as a highlight in West Norfolk’s calendar. Running until 22 February this year, it remains an important contributor to local tourism and community spirit.
James praised the collective efforts of all involved in bringing everything together, welcoming the opportunity for families and friends to come together and enjoy the festivities.
Speaking on the tradition, James Wild MP said:
"The King’s Lynn Mart is a longstanding tradition that brings our community together each year. It’s great to see families and friends enjoying the festivities, and I commend the efforts of everyone involved in making this historic event a success."
