ITV reported on a meeting James along with Summer Mace, Jason Mace, and Claire Tea had with the Attorney General regarding the sentencing of the offender convicted of causing death by dangerous driving of three members of their family.
In January 2023, Paul Carter, Lisa Carter, and Jade Mace were killed in an appalling crime when Aurelijus Cielevicius crashed his car into theirs. He was only sentenced to 10 and a half years despite Parliament legislating to increase the maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving to life imprisionment. James has been working with the family to urge a review of the sentence and other changes to police bail conditions, the sentencing guidelines, and life bans for driving.
Speaking after the meeting James said:
“This was an appalling crime and the sentence imposed was wholly inadequate which is why I have been supporting Summer and her family’s campaign. This was an important opportunity for them to meet the Attorney General and explain the terrible impact of this crime and the need for longer sentences. I have raised some specific points on their behalf following the meeting including a fuller explanation why the sentence was not referred for appeal and what options if any there are to reconsider that decision.”
In November 2023, James had an Adjournment Debate in the House of Commons on “Dangerous Driving and the Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme”
