During an Urgent Question in Parliament, James Wild MP called on the Government to take action to address the growing issue of illegal drones entering UK prisons, particularly HMP Manchester, which raise concerns about the impact on prison security.
This issue has been highlighted by Charlie Taylor, the Chief Inspector of Prisons, who described it as a “threat to national security.” Reports show drones are increasingly being used to smuggle drugs, weapons, and other contraband into high-security facilities, including HMP Manchester and HMP Long Lartin.
The problem has reached a point where law enforcement and prison services are unable to stop drone deliveries, with organised crime gangs exploiting these vulnerabilities. Namely, inmates at HMP Manchester have been seen altering windows to facilitate drone deliveries, with some drones capable of carrying up to 3 pounds of contraband.
This has led to illicit economies thriving within prisons, increased violence, and rising concerns about escapes or hostage situations. Some facilities have been compared to “airports” due to the frequent drone activity.
James Wild MP said:
“Two months ago in the House, I raised concerns that HMP Garth had been likened to an airport because of the number of drones illegally flying drugs into the prison. In response, the Lord Chancellor told me that the Prisons Minister was meeting the governor and thinking about how to deal with those problems. What precise action has the Department taken since then, and what action will the Minister take today to deal with the problems at HMP Manchester?”
In reply, Nicolas Dakin MP said:
“Actions are being taken and things are being done. I have mentioned the issues around windows, and netting and bars, but frankly this is a security issue. We are up against organised crime. We will not talk publicly about the measures that we are considering, because that would not be the best way of tackling the issue.”
