James Wild MP has welcomed Norfolk County Council’s decision to transfer the management of King’s Lynn’s historic Carnegie Library to The Garage Trust, ensuring its continued role as a valued community asset.
Established in 2002, The Garage Trust offers a diverse range of music, theatre, and dance classes, as well as community activities and small-scale performances for children. The charity plans to relocate this cultural work from their current base in Lynn at The Workshop to the Carnegie Library, investing in the site and safeguarding it for future generations.
The trust’s long-term vision includes co-designing the library’s development with the community, focusing on sustainability and reducing environmental impact. A careful refurbishment will be undertaken to preserve the building’s historic character while maintaining open access through a mix of free and paid programmes.
James Wild MP welcomed the announcement, highlighting the importance of preserving King’s Lynn’s heritage:
"The Carnegie Library is an integral part of King’s Lynn’s culture and history, and I am pleased that a community-driven solution has been found to secure its future. I welcome the Garage Trust’s plans for the building; they will breathe new life into the site while respecting its unique heritage."
This transition complements James’ established efforts to support the town library’s relocation, namely through his work in Parliament to successfully secure £25 million through the Town Deal for a new library and community hub on Baxter’s Plain, set to open later this year.
