James Wild MP recently visited Tamar Nurseries at West Drove on Walpole Highway, accompanied by the councillors for Walsoken, West Walton and Walpole Ward, Julian Kirk and Richard Blunt, to learn more about the nursery’s pioneering approach to sustainable horticulture as well as issue to help grow the business.
The tour, led by Managing Director Johan Huibers, granted James the opportunity to see firsthand the nursery’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Key to this included their water recycling efforts through reservoirs with a 20-million-litre capacity, a 40-kilowatt solar panel array powering operations, peat-free compost production, and the use of biological pest control.
The tour also highlighted the Nurseries’ investment in automated machinery that regulates greenhouse temperatures, humidity, and airflow, ensuring optimal growing conditions. These efforts even extended to the use of drones to monitor plant health and provide targeted care, expediting otherwise manual processes.
Established in 1979, Tamar Nurseries is a local business that serves landscapers, local authorities, and estate managers, producing over a million plants annually. Accredited by the Horticultural Trades Association, the nursery prioritises sustainability, using locally sourced materials and green waste composting to reduce environmental impact while supporting the local economy.
Speaking on the business, Mr Huibers said:
“My main motivation was, and still is, to stop relying on import and start producing ourselves - while still at an affordable price and what is best for the environment. My motto is: you can do anything… but you got to get started!”
The company officially relocated from School Road to its new site on West Drove on May 15, 2023. After years of careful planning, the move was designed to accommodate future growth, fulfil its commitment to carbon neutrality, and alleviate traffic issues at its former location.
