James Wild MP has responded to the government’s announcement that Norfolk has been designated a priority area for devolution and local government reform. While recognising the potential benefits, he has called for careful consideration to ensure any changes strengthen local democracy rather than distance decision-making from communities.
Under the proposals, a combined mayoral authority for Norfolk and Suffolk would replace the current two-tier system of county and district councils with unitary authorities. The government believes this shift could unlock new investment, streamline local governance, and drive economic growth.
However, James has raised concerns about the potential centralisation of power and the risk of making councils less accessible to the people they serve. He has urged that local leaders work together to ensure the reforms put residents first and maintain strong local representation.
The Labour government has also decided to postpone the planned May county council elections by 12 months.
Commenting on the announcement, James Wild MP said:
"After the government's scrapping of the previous Norfolk deal, this announcement provides clarity Norfolk is now a priority area for devolution which offers significant potential. It's crucial local councils now work collectively to shape a deal that benefits our community.
While we aim for growth and efficiency, it is vital any new arrangements do not become remote from the people they serve and proposals allow local residents to voice their opinions.
The Labour government has postponed the May elections because it has embarked on a very rushed process which I regret. As a democrat and someone who was re-elected last year, I understand and share the concerns at the government’s decision.
I will be engaging with councils, businesses, and residents to ensure Norfolk has a devolution deal that drives prosperity and is accountable to those it represents."
The coming months will be pivotal in shaping the future of governance in Norfolk. With open dialogue and a commitment to transparency, this process has the potential to bring meaningful improvements to the region. Moving forwards, James will continue working with local authorities to ensure that any new arrangements present new opportunities for the region, and best suit the residents they serve.
