James Wild MP visits King’s Oak Academy in latest school visit
As part of his focus on helping to improve education in North West Norfolk, James Wild MP’s latest visit took him to King’s Oak Academy to meet the Headteacher, Mrs Christou, and pupils.
King’s Oak Academy offers education to children from 4-7 years old with reception and years one and two with children then typically moving to other local schools.
James was shown round the school by the Headteacher during the pupils ‘Read, Write, Inc’ daily hour to improve literacy levels within the school. James listened to pupils using this synthetic phonics programme to develop children’s reading and writing skills. The school’s major focus on reading is part of changes put in place by the Headteacher and her team to improve literacy levels across the school following Ofsted recommendations.
He also visited the new library which houses a wide range of books to support the curriculum and wider learning. Members of the school council explained which books they enjoy reading with a focus on books about the planet and adventure stories. They also talked about a recent art exhibition the school held of self-portraits at St. George’s Guildhall as part of giving the children extra curricula experiences.
As a small school, King’s Oak Academy aims to deliver the best educational support to each pupil with wider help provided via a separate learning environment for children with additional educational needs. James spent time talking to the teaching assistants regarding the support available and challenges for SEND.
Speaking after the visit, James Wild MP said:
“It was a pleasure to visit King’s Oak Academy and to see the focus on helping the children develop reading skills which are essential to realising their potential. By bringing a consistent approach to learning across the school and offering wider experiences outside the classroom, the Headteacher and staff are fostering a supportive environment for pupils in which to succeed.”
